Athens Museums

Acropolis Museum
Located in Athens, Greece on the archeological site of Acropolis. It is considered one of the major archaeological museums in Athens and ranks among the most important museums of the world.

National Archaeological Museum
The National Archaeological Museum is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world devoted to ancient Greek art. It was founded at the end of the 19th century to house and protect antiquities from all over Greece, thus displaying their historical, cultural and artistic value.

National Museum of Contemporary Art
The new Museum opened its doors in 2014 in a renovated beer factory (Fix). The museum exhibits international contemporary art, individual works commissioned by the Museum, mid-career retrospectives of contemporary artists and historical retrospectives on the fields of painting, installations, photography, video, new media and "experimental" architecture.

Ancient Agora & Temple of Hephaestus
On the west side of the Agora sits the Theseion, a temple dedicated to the god Hephaestus (whom the Romans called Vulcan), and commemorating the labors of Theseus (hence the name). It was built a few years before the Parthenon, and is substantially more complete.

Athens City Museum
The Museum of the City of Athens, situated in Klafthmonos Square in two of the capital's oldest and most beautiful buildings. The Museum's collections of paintings, engravings, sculptures, pieces of furniture and important relics of Modern Greek History present a panorama of the evolution of Athens since the Frankish domination.
  Goulandris Natural History Museum
Goulandris Museum of Natural History is a public welfare institution, devoted to study, conservation and protection of natural environment.

Jewish Museum
The Museum was first established in 1977 and housed in a small room next to the city’s synagogue. It housed objects salvaged from WW II, whether artefacts, documents and manuscripts of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Museum of Cycladic Art
The Museum of Cycladic Art is dedicated to the study and promotion of ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, with special emphasis on Cycladic Art of the 3rd millennium BC.

National Art Gallery & Alexandros Soutsos Museum
The National Art Gallery is one of Greece's main art institutions and features paintings and works of art from some of Greece's and Europe's best from the 19th and 20th centuries. Emphasis is given to popular Greek contemporary artists including Giannis Tsarouchis, Domenikos Theotokopoulos (a.k.a. El Greco).

Numismatic Museum
The Numismatic Museum of Athens, with a history going back to 1829, is one of the few of its kind in the world and the only such museum in the Balkans. It provides continuous educational support for Hellenism in terms of numismatics, history and art history.

Byzantine & Christian Museum
The collections of the Byzantine Museum show the course of Greek art from the 4th to the 19th century. They comprise sculptural works, paintings and small works of all sorts.
